Welcome to Rutherglen Victoria - Victorias Premier Wine Region
Now that vintage is well and truly behind us, Rutherglen’s winemakers are busily assessing this year’s wines and making vital blending decisions. This can be quite an exhaustive process with many ‘parcels’ of wine made during vintage across many styles of wine. Each individual barrel is tasted, analysed and assessed for suitability across the winery’s range. This year, below average temperatures in February lengthened the grapes ripening time resulting in superb colour, flavour and structure. Wineries are excited by what promises to be an exceptional vintage. All reports thus far are positive with traditional varieties such as Shiraz and Durif delivering good depth of colour and compelling strong flavours for which the region is renowned.
A familiar winter sight in Rutherglen is the flocks of utes lining the edges of our vineyards. Early rising ‘michelin men’ are busily pruning the dormant vines and preparing them for budburst in a couple of months time. And so far so good for next year’s vintage; periods of good steady rainfall have placed the vines in a perfect position for the start of spring. Pulling on our gumboots has been a very welcomed change! Of course the locals all know winter is well and truly here when the town is besieged by thousands for the annual Rutherglen Winery Walkabout held in early June. This year’s event again proved a great success. Wineries reported great sales and from what we could see, visitors had a blast enjoying the various festivities the event offers and of course, sampling the new releases.
