Visitor Information
A region with such diversity as ours takes a while to get your head around. The Rutherglen Wine Experience Visitor Information Centre has been established by the winemakers and businesses of Rutherglen and our shire, the Indigo Shire, to enable you to get the most from your visit.
Information Talk to our local full time and volunteer staff, who know the region and its wines very well (too well in some cases). Find out which roads to take (and who can take you), the best picnic spots on the Murray, and what is happening when, where and why.
How do I get to Rutherglen?

The Home Of Muscat: The Worlds Richest Wine The Wine Centre marks the start of the Muscat trail, an unforgettable tour around the great Muscat Houses of Rutherglen. View the displays on the growing and making of Rutherglen Muscat, collect your Muscat of Rutherglen Booklet and Muscat Trail map, grab a coffee, and head off into the ethereal world of the Worlds Richest Wines and the characters who make them. Wahguynah to Rutherglen Rail Trail The Wahgunyah to Rutherglen extension of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is now officially open. Cyclists can explore the Rutherglen wine region on the sealed path from the banks of the Murray River to the gold heritage village of Rutherglen. The 9km sealed trail (one way) travels through the heart of the Rutherglen wine region and is a great way to explore the many famous wineries that have made this region a destination for food and wine lovers. The trail is suitable for all types of cycles from road bikes to mountain bikes and due to the relatively flat terrain, is suitable for all members of the family. For those of you who haven’t ridden a bike for quite a while, it’s a pretty easy process just to ‘swing the leg over’ and jump right back into the saddle. Bikes and helmets are available for hire at the Rutherglen Information Centre if you want to ‘dip your tow in the water’ again. There are also additional loops off the Wahgunyah end of the trail that follow the banks of the mighty Murray and traverse beautiful River Red Gum forests. (N.B. These loops are not suitable for road bikes) Cyclists can access the Wahgunyah to Rutherglen section of the Rail Trail from either end and there are toilet facilities, accommodation and food & drink options in both towns. For those keen to ride the entire Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, there is a designated route that connects Rutherglen to the main Rail Trail at Bowser. From Bowser, cyclists can either make their way back into Wangaratta or continue along the Trail passing through the towns of Everton, Beechworth, Myrtleford, and Porepunkah before finishing at Bright. The entire distance from the Murray River in Wahguhyah to Bright is approx 150kms. See the attached pdf map for downloading plus a Bowser to Wahgunyah fact sheet for download, with a specific description of the route. You can also call in at the Rutherglen Information Centre (at the roundabout) for your free copy of the North East Ride Guide plus a range of maps on the many other exciting rides around Rutherglen.
